Gym Curriculum

Question:  How often does my child have gym?
Answer:

  • Kindergarten meets once a week for 30 minutes

  • First throught fourth grade gym classes are held twice a week for 30 minutes each

  • Fifth, sixth, seventh and eighth grades meet once a week for 40 minutes

Question:  What does my Child do in gym class?
Answer: 

  • Warm-ups: stretching, muscle strenghening and cardiovascular endurance

  • Skill building

  • Lead up games/cooperative games

  • Team sports

  • Physical fitness testing

  • Lifetime fitness activities including roller skating

Question:  What should my child wear for gym?
Answer:  

  • ALL STUDENTS - kindergarten through 8th MUST wear gym shoes and socks - buying good gym shoes doesn't have to cost a lot of money, but it should follow some of the restrictions listed below.

    • Gym shoes may  not have any kind of heel

    • Try not to buy a shoe that has a solid flat bottom

    • Please do not buy funky big-soled gym shoes for gym class, they're cute, but not practical

    • Casual shoes with rubber soles and hiking boots or any other kind of boots are not allowed

    • Ties and/or velcros are required

  • Grades K-4 MUST ALSO WEAR:
    • Girls - comfortable loose fitting tops, loose fitting pants, or loose fitting shorts that come down to the knee (dresses, jumpers and skirts are not to be worn during class time)
    • Boys - a Kippah with a clip is to be on at all times, a loose fitting shirt and comfortable pants
  • Grades 5-8 MUST WEAR IN ADDITION TO THE ABOVE
    • Boys and girls - must change clothes for their gym class (both their shirt and pants/skirt). They may wear any t-shirt or top that is loose fitting and has no improper words or pictures.  They may wear sweat pants or win/nylon pants (loose fitting).  Shorts may be worn providing they are also loose fitting and come down to the middle of the knee.
    • Boys must keep their kippah on at all times
    • Deodorant (roll-on or stick only) is a must.
  • IN ADDITION
    • All girls with medium to long hair need to pull it back in a pony tail, braid, half pony tail, etc. (Grades 1-8)
    • Students are discouraged from wearing any jewelry at all but no hoops or dangling earrings allowed (Grades 1-8)

Question:  What are the consequences for not being prepared?
Answer:  These consequences are per trimester and at the end of each trimester, the kids are given a clean slate and start over.

  • First and Second Grade
    • First time - oral warning given to student
    • Second & third time - call to parent asking for their involvement in helping their child remember their gym clothing
    • Fourth time - detention after school that day or the next
  • Third and Fourth Grade
    • First time - oral warning given to the student
    • Second time - Call to parent asking for their involvement in helping their chil to remember their gym clothing
    • Third time - detention after school that day or the next
  • Fifth through Eighth Grade
    • First time - warning
    • Second time - detention after school that day or the next

Question:  What are the rules my child will be expected to follow?
Answer:

  • Keep your hands and feet to yourself
  • Speak respectfully to each other and to the teacher
  • Be a good listener so you can follow the instructions
  • Play fair...follow the rules
  • Be a good sport
  • Have fun
  • A note from home is required if your child is unable to participate due to illness or injury
  • If your child has had a serious injury (broken bones, recovery from surgery, etc.) I need a note from the doctor BEFORE your child can participate again

Question:  How is my child evaluated and graded?
Answer:  

  • K through 2nd grade - students are assessed on basic skills, i.e., jumping, hopping, skipping, throwing, catching, and balance; twice a year, as well as some sports skills
  • Grades 3-8 - skill testing is done in every sport at the end of each unit
  • Participation in class (all students)
  • Being properly dressed and prepared for class (all students)
