Curriculum Overview

  1. The fifth grade social studies curriculum will encompass the following:

    1. Map and globe skills and chart reading
    2. Themes in United States history that repeat in the present
    3. Written composition using social studies content to generate the student's writing
    4. Practice in oral presentation, including some dramatization of historical events
    5. Discussion of current events and how it impacts our lives and that show history repeating itself
  2. The themes in United States history are as follows:

    1. Exploration and occupation of the continental U.S. and beyond
    2. Development of American trade, industry and agriculture
    3. Foundation and development of American government and institutions
    4. Extension of suffrage and civil rights and treatment of minorities
    5. The U.S. as a world power and melting pot of culture from early days to present

Tests will reflect factual information as well as some analysis.  The students will learn to think critically.  Also, time will be spent learning how to take and use these notes to study for tests.  They will be required to bring in supplemental material that will facilitate and enhance discussions.
