The
5th grade math program this year will help students develop the math skills
foundation they need to succeed in school and for a lifetime. They
explore concepts using manipulatives, then practice and apply the skills that
reinforce those concepts through problem solving. The problem solving
lessons help students learn how to identify the relevant information in a
problem as well as how to apply the appropriate math skills to solve the
problem.
In
addition, the students will begin to develop a foundation in algebraic
thinking. Some of the concepts covered that foster algebraic
thinking. Some of the concepts covered that foster algebraic thinking
are patterns; numerical relationships; reading, writing, and evaluating
expressions and equations; using functions and formulas to complete tables,
graphing ordered pairs or applying formulas; using number lines, tables and
graphs to represent mathematical relationships.
