Curriculum Overview

The children will experience a wide range of instructional activities in listening, reading, writing, discussing and/or speaking through the literary elements of fiction, traditional literature, poetry, biography and non-fiction.

The Chicago Unit is designed to expand our concept of communities to the people and events that contributed to the development of Chicago as a major metropolitan city as well as instill pride in Chicago.  It examines aspects of Chicago’s development and culture.  A variety of maps, charts, graphs, photographs, and illustrations are used throughout to re-enforce the major concepts in an interesting and meaningful way. The unit also incorporates geography, writing and critical thinking skills.  Each student will be required to research one particular building and to construct that building towards the end of the second semester.
